Effective Bible Reading
Weekly Notes
December 7-13 This week’s readings begin with Paul’s epistle to the Romans. Paul writes we are saved by faith, not through adherence to the law. In Roman’s 8 Paul writes “thre is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus”.Paul relates how the Gentiles are grafted into the promise to the Jews. In Romans 11:26 Paul writes “all Israel will be saved”. In that statement Paul writes God has future plans for his chosen people, the Jews.
Paul returns to Jerusalem, where he is arrested because of complaints by foreign Jews about Paul’s ministry to the gentiles.
Paul is saved from immediate punishment by asserting his Roman citizenship. Over a period of two years, Paul is under house arrest while he pleads his case before three rulers, Felix, Festus, and Agrippa. Paul’s discourse with Agrippa is one of his most powerful defenses of the Gospel. Getting nowhere with these three, Paul asserts his right to appeal to Caesar in Rome. On the voyage to Rome, the ship Paul was sailing on, sank in a storm. None aboard lost their lives, and they wintered on the island of Malta.
December 14-20 This week’s readings conclude the Pauline epistles and ends with epistles by James and Jude, Jesus’ two half brothers.
The epistle to the Colossians by Paul was written to the Church in Colosse while Paul was in prison in Rome. Paul demonstrates why Christ is superior to paganism.
The epistle to Philemon was written by Paul to Philemon, who’s runaway slave Onesimus Paul had befriended. Paul asks Philemon to take back Onesimus as a brother in Christ.
The epistle to the Ephisians was written by Paul to the Church in Ephesus. The highlight of the letter of chapter 5 where Paul outlines relationships between husbands and wives, as well as parents and children, and masters and slaves.
The epistle to the Philippians was written by Paul to the Church in Philippi. This short letter contains many of Paul’s most often quoted verses.
